Since 1994, when the organization was founded, Kaycee Buffalo Johnson Economic Development has been concerned with attracting businesses to Johnson County and helping existing businesses to grow. More than that, KBJ Economic Development wants to work on diversifying the economy. This is critical to the health of the whole community.

The proverb about not putting all one’s eggs into the same basket holds true for the local economy. In the free market, all sorts of factors lead to fluctuations in the success of businesses, with some businesses declining while others see a boost. Diversification allows the community to ride out these natural fluctuations.

The three primary industries in Wyoming are energy-related production, tourism, and agriculture. In KBJ Economic Development’s strategic plan, developed in 2014, there are four target industries the organization would like to focus its diversification efforts on for Johnson County:

Technology/Information Services

Small Light Manufacturing

Warehousing and Distribution

Tourism/Hospitality/Convention
