Nearly 70 years ago, a mathematical physicist from Powell, Wyoming, traveled to Japan to help the country rebuild following the devastating effects of World War II.

W. Edwards Deming’s theories helped the Japanese revolutionize manufacturing processes and quality control. He later brought those practices to bear in the United States and watched his statistical- and management-focused approach rejuvenate a slumping automotive industry.

The processes developed by Deming are taught worldwide. Both Japan and the U.S. have honored Deming with national medals. He was a Nobel Prize nominee. Both the Automotive and Science and Technology hall of fames inducted him into their ranks.
